About Your Hosts At Earlystown Manor Bed and Breakfast

Meet Anne and Zane Smilowitz

Welcome to "Happy Valley" in the heart of the Nittany Lion Country where, as your hosts, we will strive to make your stay relaxing, memorable and as comfortable as possible.  We are Zane and Anne Smilowitz and we welcome you to Earlystown Manor located just outside State College, Pennsylvania.

The Earlystown Manor Bed and Breakfast was designed and built to be a bed and breakfast and opened for business in April, 1993. We first came to the State College area in 1967 when Zane accepted a faculty position at Penn State. Anne also worked at Penn State as an Administrative Assistant in the College of Business Administration, Department of Continuing Education. Anne retired from Penn State University in 1999 after 21 years of service. Zane retired as Professor Emeritus from the Department of Entomology, College of Agricultural Sciences in 2000 after 33 years of service.  We are Penn State Proud!

We have found the business of innkeeping extremely rewarding.  It has been a joy to meet and establish friendships with new guests and renew our existing friendships with many returning guests. Zane has extended his research background into cooking. He enjoys experimenting with new breakfast dishes, including "To Die for Baked French Toast", an infamous Omelet Roll and the ever favorite Egg Stratas. Anne is the baker and our guests delight in the various Amish Friendship Breads that she enjoys preparing.

We are also avid gardeners. Each year we plant and care for over 100 containers of flowers that surround the house.  We also have a fruit orchard containing approximately 30 trees, including various apple, peach and pear varieties. Strawberries and raspberries are also cultivated on the Manor's ten acres. During the growing season, we take pride in sharing our vegetable garden and orchard bounty with local neighbors and our many visiting guests.

We are pleased to announce that we have recently been bestowed with the high honor and distinction of being named, Most Attentive Staff worldwide by visitors to the travel website LanierBB.com. We are humbled to learn that we were selected for this award from 8,500 B&B's around the world and that the Earlystown Manor received the most number of votes from past visitors.  We should add that these votes were not solicited, we were not even aware of the award!  This proved that the best compliments are those not sought after.  We look forward to welcoming you at our door and to offering you the same attentive service that others have received.
